STRUCK BY: Forced Joy


In this era of widespread employee dissatisfaction, many employers are looking for ways to boost engagement. To that end, Tiffany & Co. rolled out an internal app (“Tiffany Joy”), where employees were meant to share meaningful moments from their work and personal lives. The goal of Tiffany Joy was to turn Tiffany into a more enjoyable place to work. Unfortunately, under pressure from managers to increase their app usage, employees quickly nicknamed it “Forced Joy”.

Forced joy would be funny if it weren’t so dystopian. With so many people back into the office based solely on the whims of executives, it’s now not enough to be present and do your job. Those same executives would also like to see excitement and engagement while you’re working. Please and thank you.

While a certain level of emotional projection has always been part of any job - there’s a reason it’s called job performance in the first place - mandated engagement isn’t going to work. Happy and engaged employees are great for business, no doubt. The best way to get there is by creating an environment where folks can effectively do their jobs. Not by forcing joy.
