STRUCK BY: Quiet Retirement


I’ve been noticing that folks in their 40s are quietly retiring out of traditional tech jobs and into something else.

I didn't see it as it was first happening - it started with folks who had relocated during the remote work phase of COVID and never really “returned” to work in quite the same way. Then I saw others (like me) taking the stock options they’d accumulated and using those to launch second careers. And now I see a cohort that’s been living through years of “unprecedented” events both in the workplace and out who are burned out and let down by the companies they've worked for for so many years.

And this is happening just as AI is arriving as a huge disruptor in terms of how we think about work now, and how we think about what work will look like in the future. For some, this is exciting. For others, it’s exhausting, and it feels impossible to make yet another paradigm shift in just a few years.

Honestly, I kind of feel both ways about it. I’d love to hear what you think.
