STRUCK BY: We Gotta Get Out Of This Place

A whopping 51% of US workers are watching for or actively seeking a new job. This is the highest percentage it’s been since 2015.

While it might not be a surprise to hear that total compensation ranks high in the reasons people give, engagement and culture rank higher (full survey here, for those interested). As we know, people don’t leave companies, they leave managers.

The job market remains cool to cold right now, but time is a flat circle, and it will heat up. Now is the time to invest in those employees who you want to keep. If you think they aren’t out looking, odds are you’re wrong. Comp and benefits might not be something you can address, but investing your time now into career development or cleaning up persistent organizational issues is going to pay off down the road.

An interesting note from the same survey: only 25% of employees polled would recommend their organization as a great place to work.

For people considering a move to a startup, equity is often the biggest part of their compensation packages. Your hard work now, says the company, will pay off when the company goes public down the road. But volatile economic conditions have led to a sharp downtick in both the number of IPOs and how much money they’ve raised over the past four years. As companies (sometimes unexpectedly) stay private for longer, employees can get restless. More and more companies are looking for ways to...

Sitting down to write this week, I tried to imagine what folks might want to read. And I came up fairly empty. What could anyone want to read about the modern workplace when it feels like the world is on fire? But we have to work to live. And yet many of us no longer live to work. And so now, when work might feel incidental at best, or a distraction at worst - the answer lies in remembering that distinction. Remembering to invest in and focus on our lives when we’re in them, and to do our job...
